Bonus Story 6 of 10

My Injury Time

The air was dry and dusty, late in the afternoon. Young men in green and gold jerseys were in two lines kicking balls to each other. The exercise was repetitive and seemed unnecessary to the ignorant about the game of soccer. A few older men stood on either side of the queue at intervals speaking to the young men in inaudible tones. The training session was almost finished and Paula was longing to head home after a grueling day at work. She waited in the stands of the local soccer field for her younger brother who she had the awesome task of caring for after their parents had died in a plane crash just a few years before.

She sighed and wondered why the time was dragging on at a snail’s pace when she wanted to get a move on. She longed for some mac and cheese and a good book to read while she curled up on her bed. Another look to the field told her the practice was done as some players dropped themselves on the ground chit chatting while others headed for the changing rooms. She eased herself up and walked over to one of the handsome young men who had a smile that could melt any girl’s heart. He stood speaking to one of the older men and had not shifted or changed his expression even though he had seen her coming towards them.

She stood at a short distance, out of respect as she had been trained to do from her years in the catholic high school she had attended. The teachers always told her to wait until she was acknowledged before approaching. She never could shake this and it was now a part of her. She did it even though this was her little seventeen-year-old brother.

He glanced at her a couple times and returned his gaze to the older man. He was dressed in a lime green polo shirt and matching cap. His shoulders were broad and his upper frame heavy as if he had been weight training. His back was turned to her and she could not see his face as he gestured while he spoke.

She pouted and looked intently at her brother knowing he saw that she was ready to go. When he glanced at her again, she raised her eyebrows sending him a silent message that she knew needed no words.

The older man saw the distraction and turned to look back as he continued speaking.

The conversation continued for a few more minutes and she grew impatient and called his name. Then he broke into that break your heart smile she loved to see.

“Excuse me coach – this is my sister Paula,” he said interrupting the conversation.

They moved towards her as she tried to keep her expression of annoyance at bay.

The older man held out his hand to her and waited for her to respond.

“Nice to meet you, I’m Steven Manning – the new coach for Ingleside.
